For older dogs, most especially the smaller breeds, CHF poses a grave threat to their lives as it prevents the heart from functioning properly. CHF is characterized by retention of fluids that causes congestion in the heart and lung areas. For a quick background about this disorder, you will know that your pet has CHF when it will manifest any of the following symptoms: abdominal swelling, weak pulse, rapid heart rate, coughing and fatigue among others.

In canines, CHF is grouped into Class II to Class IV. Class II shows mild symptoms like fatigability. Class III has moderate symptoms while giving the dog general body discomfort. To address this problem, Vetmedin has a two-way approach to CHF treatment. First, it elicits a positive inotropic response to the heart. This simply means that it improves the strength of heart muscle contraction thereby improving the pumping of the heart. Secondly, it increases the diameter of the blood vessels (passageway of blood) thereby improving the overall blood circulation. Because of such, it draws out excess fluids and blood away from the heart and lungs which relieves congestion. And so, because Vetmedin for dogs has a positive inotropic response and dilates the blood vessels, it is therefore classified as an inodilator.
